A bachelor’s degree can make you eligible to consider more recruitment routes, but “graduate required” is not a complete eligibility decision. Two vacancies advertised under the same examination can have different subject requirements. A result announced after a qualification cut-off can matter even when you registered before the application deadline. A bank officer vacancy and a regular government department post can also offer different employment arrangements.
This guide helps you match your exact degree to an actual post, using dated official notices as examples rather than pretending that old application windows are still open. Start with one notice, identify the post code and check the education, age, skills and documents before making an application or paying a fee.
Graduates in India can explore recruitment routes such as SSC Combined Graduate Level (CGL), UPSC Civil Services, RRB NTPC Graduate, participating public-sector bank PO and customer-service recruitment, and specific state public service commission or departmental posts. Technical, teaching and specialist opportunities may require a particular degree, professional qualification, licence, postgraduate study or work experience. No bachelor’s degree guarantees eligibility for every graduate-level post. Confirm that your university and qualification are accepted, your result was declared by the notice’s cut-off, and you meet any subject, percentage, age, skill and local-language conditions. Use the newest official advertisement and corrigenda to determine whether applications are currently open.
- Separate any-recognised-degree posts, subject-specific degree posts and degree-plus-extra-credential posts before choosing an examination.
- The SSC CGL 2026 notice set a bachelor’s-degree rule for many posts, but its Junior Statistical Officer and Statistical Investigator clauses were different.
- In that SSC example, the educational-qualification date was 1 August 2026. A result merely being processed by then was not treated as a declared pass.
- RRB NTPC Graduate and Undergraduate are distinct recruitment categories; holding a degree does not merge their post lists or tests.
- IBPS selects for participating banks; a public-sector bank appointment is not automatically the same service category as a central-government department appointment.
- UPSC runs several examinations; a bachelor’s degree relevant to Civil Services does not by itself establish eligibility for every UPSC examination.
- Old vacancies, salary estimates and application dates do not describe an open recruitment today. Read the current notice and any amendment.
1. Which recruitment routes can a graduate explore?
This is a route map, not a live-vacancy list. The particular examination notice decides which posts are offered, their eligibility conditions and the authorised application portal.
| Recruitment route | What to examine first | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| SSC CGL | Degree clause for the exact post; age and subject rules | Some statistics and language-related posts require more than a generic bachelor’s degree. |
| UPSC Civil Services | Current examination notice, recognised qualification and stage rules | Civil Services is one UPSC route; other UPSC examinations can require specialist degrees. |
| RRB NTPC Graduate | The graduate CEN, post preference, notified medical/skill stages | Separate from RRB NTPC Undergraduate and from technical railway jobs. |
| Participating-bank PO or customer-service recruitment | IBPS/bank advertisement, degree, cut-off and language requirements | Bank recruitment is not identical to direct central-government departmental service. |
| State PSC / departmental posts | Exact state post, qualification, local language, domicile and category evidence | Rules vary across states and advertised positions. |
| Technical, health, teaching or PSU roles | Named degree, registration, training, experience and recruitment method | Any graduation is often insufficient for specialist roles. |
These are routes, not open forms. The SSC CGL 2026, UPSC CSE 2026, IBPS PO/MT XVI and RRB NTPC Graduate CEN 06/2025 references below are dated recruitment examples. Their original application periods may be closed or changed. Check the newest official notice before applying; no vacancy, salary or deadline in this guide should be treated as a current offer.
2. Three types of “graduate eligibility” you must distinguish
| Degree requirement | How to read it | Illustrative case |
|---|---|---|
| A recognised bachelor’s degree in any discipline | Confirm the issuing institution and completion date; check all other conditions separately. | SSC CGL 2026 described “all other posts” this way in its general educational clause. |
| Bachelor’s degree plus a specified subject or Class 12 marks | Check the exact subject and alternative qualification routes, not just the exam name. | SSC CGL 2026 Junior Statistical Officer offered distinct Mathematics/Statistics qualification paths. |
| Specific professional degree, certificate, licence or experience | Match the complete post requirement, including registration or years of work if stated. | A technical, nursing, specialist-bank or teaching vacancy may have its own credential rules. |
A BCom, BA, BSc, BBA or BTech graduate should not assume that their stream either opens or closes an entire recruiting authority. Compare the individual post’s essential qualification first. A desirable qualification is different from a mandatory one. Some jobs also test a regional language, computer proficiency, typing, physical fitness or medical standards.
An actual post-level contrast: SSC CGL’s 2026 official notice placed a recognised bachelor’s degree under the clause for “all other posts”, but specified different educational criteria for Junior Statistical Officer and Statistical Investigator Grade-II. An otherwise eligible BA or BCom graduate should therefore check the specific JSO subject/marks clause rather than assuming that the general degree rule applies to that post. These are historical 2026 conditions, not a prediction of future CGL requirements.
3. SSC CGL: one exam does not mean one degree rule
The official SSC CGL 2026 notice is a useful example of why a post-specific check matters. Its educational-qualification section specifies a recognised bachelor’s degree for many posts, but also sets additional requirements for named categories.
Junior Statistical Officer has alternative subject routes
Under that notice, JSO accepted either a bachelor’s degree in any subject with at least 60% marks in Mathematics at Class 12 or a bachelor’s degree in any subject with Statistics as a degree-level subject. These are two alternatives, not requirements that every applicant must satisfy simultaneously.
Statistical Investigator is not the same as JSO
The Statistical Investigator Grade-II clause lists specified degree subjects, including Statistics, Mathematics, Economics and other named disciplines. Check the complete official list rather than assuming that the JSO alternatives also cover Statistical Investigator.
A degree can be necessary but not sufficient
The same 2026 notice required regional/official-language proficiency and supporting matriculation-level evidence for certain state-cadre audit/accounts posts. Conversely, it labelled various professional finance qualifications desirable for some audit roles rather than automatically essential. Read both words carefully.
| SSC CGL 2026 example | Essential-qualification question |
|---|---|
| General “all other posts” clause | Is your bachelor’s degree recognised and completed by the specified date? |
| Junior Statistical Officer | Do you meet one of the notified Class 12 Mathematics or degree Statistics alternatives? |
| Statistical Investigator Grade-II | Is your actual degree subject among those explicitly listed? |
| State-cadre audit/accounts post | Is the required state language certificate or proficiency condition also satisfied? |

4. Final year, pending result and qualification cut-off date
“I am in my final year” is not the same as “I have passed by the required date”. In the historical SSC CGL 2026 notice, final-year candidates could apply provided that they possessed the essential qualification by 1 August 2026. The notice said the result must have been declared by the specified date; a university merely processing it was not enough. Proof could later be checked through degree, provisional certificate and mark sheets.
Hypothetical date-check example, based on that SSC notice: A student submits a form in June 2026. Their university formally declares the qualifying result on 31 July 2026, and they can produce accepted proof: the education cut-off may be met, subject to all other rules. If the university only declares the result on 3 August 2026, submitting the form earlier does not cure the late qualification. This is an illustration of the notice’s rule, not a decision about any individual candidate.
- Identify the notification’s educational-qualification cut-off date, not just its application deadline.
- Verify the university’s formal declaration date and accepted documentary evidence.
- Check recognition or equivalence requirements for your degree and the period in which it was awarded.
- Read final-year or appearing-candidate conditions, if present, without assuming all exams allow them.
- Confirm that a corrigendum has not changed the relevant rule.
Distance-learning and equivalent qualifications need particular attention: the SSC CGL 2026 notice discusses recognition for the relevant period and supporting proof. Do not assume that every distance or online qualification is automatically accepted for every regulated profession or recruitment.
5. UPSC Civil Services: a graduate route, not a blanket UPSC rule
UPSC’s Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination 2026 page identifies a 4 February 2026 notice and a 27 February 2026, 6 p.m. original application deadline. This is an examination reference, not an invitation to submit a CSE 2026 form now.
For Civil Services, investigate the current notice’s qualifying-degree and appearing-candidate rules alongside nationality, age, attempts, category and documentary conditions. UPSC also runs technical, medical, defence and other examinations with different eligibility criteria. A bachelor's degree in any subject is not blanket eligibility for every UPSC post or service.
If the detailed UPSC notice is inaccessible, do not rely on a secondary page’s exact birth-date range, attempt limit or final-year documentation rule. Check the official downloadable notice or wait until it can be verified. For an application route, use the link supplied by that particular examination, not a generic website button.
6. Railways: NTPC Graduate is separate from NTPC Undergraduate
RRB’s official recruitment listing distinguishes NTPC Graduate CEN 06/2025 from NTPC Undergraduate CEN 07/2025. A graduate may still be academically qualified for some lower-minimum-qualification posts, but that does not make the two recruitment notices interchangeable.
Use the Graduate CEN to verify which posts actually require a degree, their category-wise conditions, post preferences, medical standards and any applicable typing or aptitude tests. An RRB technical recruitment is yet another category; some technical posts require a named engineering, diploma or trade qualification rather than any bachelor’s degree.
The RRB’s November 2025 corrigendum to its Graduate CEN revised certain application timelines and the relevant qualification/certificate date while keeping a separate age-reckoning date. This illustrates why recording one “last date” for every purpose can be misleading. For a new recruitment, check the latest CEN and corrigenda directly.
Calculate the right dates: Use the Age Calculator with the notice’s age-reckoning date, and plan application tasks with the Application Deadline Planner. Neither tool changes the official cut-off or establishes eligibility.
7. Bank recruitment: PO, customer service and specialist posts differ
IBPS’s PO/MT XVI page lists its 2026 notification and subsequent corrigenda. Its official 2026 registration portal listed registration from 1 to 26 July 2026 and cautioned that submission of an application does not establish that the applicant satisfies all notification conditions. Those dates are a past example, not a current opening.
A Probationary Officer, a Customer Service Associate and a Specialist Officer are different recruitment routes. A specialist advertisement may require a particular professional degree or experience. Some participating-bank jobs also specify language requirements or other conditions. Do not extrapolate a PO’s degree rule or interview stage to every IBPS recruitment. IBPS’s tentative calendar is a planning reference, not a substitute for the latest detailed notification.
A participating public-sector bank job, a public sector undertaking (PSU) position and a central-government civil post have different employers, service rules and recruitment channels. They can all appear in searches for “government jobs after graduation”, but they should not be treated as identical appointments.
8. Degree-wise map: BA, BCom, BSc, BTech and other graduates
A stream list is a search starting point, not a final eligibility certificate. Check the post’s exact clause even when its title seems closely related to your course.
| Your qualification | Routes worth investigating | Additional question to resolve in the notice |
|---|---|---|
| BA / humanities | General-degree posts in SSC CGL, some CSE/state PSC and bank routes | Any subject, language, marks or experience restriction? |
| BCom / business | General-degree routes, bank recruitment and finance/accounting vacancies | Is CA/CMA/CS or another finance credential essential or merely desirable? |
| BSc / mathematics / statistics | General-degree routes plus some subject-specific statistical or scientific posts | Do your actual subjects and marks meet the precise named requirement? |
| BTech / engineering | General-degree recruitment plus engineering/technical vacancies | Is a specific engineering branch, GATE score, registration or experience required? |
| BBA / BCA / other bachelor’s degrees | General-degree routes and some post-specific commercial or IT positions | Is the degree recognised/equivalent and does the post accept that discipline? |
| Professional degrees | Broad-degree opportunities and profession-specific posts | Is a valid licence, registration, internship or advanced qualification required? |
Two hypothetical graduates: A BCom graduate with no Statistics at degree level should not conclude that the SSC CGL JSO statistics pathway applies merely because JSO appears under CGL. They would need to check whether the alternate Class 12 Mathematics-mark pathway applies. A BSc Statistics graduate should still verify the precise subject record, educational cut-off, age and every other condition. The recruiting authority—not this example—decides eligibility.
9. Do marks, CGPA, typing and work experience matter?
There is no universal graduation-percentage rule across all government or public-sector recruitment. Some general-degree routes emphasise passing an accepted qualification; others specify a percentage, a named subject, professional credentials or experience. If a notice says “minimum aggregate”, read its method for calculating it, whether final-year marks count and what evidence is accepted.
Check figures without guessing: Use the Percentage Calculator when marks and maximum marks are known. Use the CGPA to Percentage Calculator only with your institution’s authorised conversion method and where the recruitment accepts it. These tools cannot decide whether a degree or conversion is valid.
For an experience-based vacancy, compare required duties, dates and proof with the job’s wording; the Work Experience Calculator can help with arithmetic, but it cannot confirm that an employer or recruiting authority accepts a particular stint. If a computer typing or data-entry stage appears, the Typing Speed Test is practice only—not an official skill-test result or proof of qualification.
10. Compare salary, appointment type and location without inventing a ranking
A recruitment notice may show basic pay, a pay level or a bank salary scale. These are not identical to take-home pay. Allowances, city, deductions, probation, appointment terms and employer rules can change the final amount. Some published “highest-paying jobs” lists mix basic and gross figures or include roles with specialist qualifications.
| Factor | What to record from the official advertisement |
|---|---|
| Employment arrangement | Government department, public-sector bank, PSU, contract, apprenticeship or other stated type |
| Pay | Official basic/level/scale and whether the figure is basic, gross or an allowance-inclusive estimate |
| Work and mobility | Actual duties, transfer provisions, location restrictions and field work if stated |
| Recruitment stages | Exact examination, interview, typing, medical or document-verification stages for your post |
| Entry conditions | Degree, subject, experience, language and any professional certification |
For a rough scenario, the Government Salary Calculator may be useful when its inputs match the notified pay arrangement. Do not treat its estimate as a promised offer or assume that a government pay-scale calculator applies automatically to a public-sector bank.
11. A practical seven-step plan from graduation to application
- Pick a role, not just an exam name. Choose an actual post family—general administration, statistics, rail operations, bank services or a named specialist role—and find its latest official notice.
- Verify the recruiting authority. Record the advertisement number, official portal and any corrigendum. See How to Read a Government Job Notification for a systematic reading method.
- Check the educational gate. Match your exact university, degree, subjects, marks/conversion and date the result was formally declared.
- Check other eligibility. Calculate age on the specified date, then review category evidence, language, skills, experience, physical or medical requirements where applicable.
- Prepare the documents. Gather accepted degree/marksheets, identity information, certificates and photo/signature files according to the current notice. Use the Government Job Document Checklist as a starting checklist.
- Submit on the authorized portal. Follow How to Fill Government Job Forms, complete any required fee stage and confirm the final submitted status.
- Track the recruitment. Save the acknowledgement, check notices and corrections, then follow admit-card, exam and verification announcements; no tool can guarantee selection.
Read How to Apply for Government Jobs for the wider recruitment journey and Government Job Application Mistakes for avoiding submission and correction-window errors.
12. Eligibility worksheet to complete before paying an application fee
- I have the current official notice, relevant post code and all applicable amendments.
- I know whether the post accepts any recognised degree, requires a specified subject, or needs extra credentials.
- I verified my university/qualification, actual marks, conversion rule and result-declaration date.
- I calculated age on the specified date and read any category-specific relaxation conditions.
- I checked language, typing/data entry, medical, physical, experience and professional-registration clauses, if any.
- I confirmed this is a central-government, state-government, bank, PSU or other stated employment arrangement.
- I recorded the official closing time, application method and payment/confirmation process.
- I saved evidence and can explain why my qualifications match the exact rule in the notice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can BA, BCom and BSc graduates apply for the same government exam?
Sometimes. An examination such as SSC CGL may have general-degree posts as well as posts with particular Mathematics, Statistics or language requirements. Match your degree to the exact post, not merely the exam title.
Can a final-year student apply for government jobs?
Only where the notice permits it and the student meets its qualification-completion date. SSC CGL 2026 allowed appearing candidates subject to holding the essential qualification by 1 August 2026; a late-declared result would not satisfy that historical cut-off.
Is 60% graduation compulsory for every government job?
No universal 60% rule applies across all recruitments. In SSC CGL 2026, the JSO clause offered one route involving 60% in Class 12 Mathematics, or an alternative involving Statistics as a degree subject. Do not mistake that for a 60% graduation requirement on every CGL post.
Are bank PO jobs the same as central-government posts?
No. IBPS conducts recruitment for participating banks. A bank appointment has its own employer and service rules, which are not automatically those of a central-government department or a PSU.
Can any graduate apply for railway NTPC Graduate recruitment?
The graduate recruitment is a route to investigate, but eligibility still depends on the current CEN’s recognised qualification, age, post-specific skill/medical conditions and other rules. NTPC Graduate and NTPC Undergraduate are distinct notifications.
Is a distance-learning bachelor’s degree accepted?
It depends on the recognition of the institution and programme for the relevant period and any occupation-specific restrictions. The SSC CGL 2026 notice discusses acceptable open/distance qualifications and supporting proof. Check your exact degree and the current recruitment notice.
Do my CGPA and percentage calculators prove eligibility?
No. They perform calculations from inputs. Only an accepted institutional conversion rule and the recruiting authority’s stated qualification conditions can establish which number is relevant.
Are any of the example recruitment applications open today?
This guide does not claim that. It uses dated 2025–26 notices to explain eligibility. Check a current official advertisement and any corrigendum for available vacancies and application dates.
The post—not the general phrase “government jobs after graduation”—decides what your degree qualifies you to apply for. Start with the current official notice, check the exact post’s subject, result date and other eligibility conditions, then prepare documents and submit through the authorised portal. Use Regal Naukri’s Tools Hub for calculations and preparation, not as a substitute for the recruiting authority’s decision.
