Estimate marks using the correct negative-marking rule.
Calculate a raw score from your answer counts and the actual marks and penalty rules in your exam instructions. No assumed negative-marking rate or predicted cut-off.
Enter your answers and the marking scheme. Results are calculated in your browser and are not stored.
Correct marks minus penalty
Raw score equals correct answers × marks per correct answer, minus wrong answers × deduction per wrong answer.
Rules vary by exam
There is no single negative-marking fraction that applies to all exams, sections or questions. Confirm the scheme before calculating.
Raw is not normalized
Normalization, dropped questions, sectional rules, provisional keys and final official scores are outside this calculation.
How to calculate an exam score
- Check the latest official marking scheme, including any correction to the answer key.
- Enter the total number of questions, correct answers, wrong answers and marks awarded per correct answer.
- Choose the precise negative-marking rule shown in the instructions; use the custom field for any other fixed deduction.
- Calculate the raw score and review earned marks, penalty, unattempted questions and attempt accuracy.
In a 100-question practice test, 65 correct and 20 wrong answers at 2 marks per correct answer with a one-fourth penalty produce 130 earned marks − 10 penalty marks = 120 raw marks. The remaining 15 questions are unattempted.
Exam Score Calculator FAQ
What is negative marking?
It is a deduction for an incorrect answer when the official marking scheme specifies one. The amount differs by exam and sometimes by question or section.
Are unanswered questions penalized?
This calculator assumes unanswered questions have no deduction. If the official scheme says otherwise, or questions carry different marks, calculate sections separately or use the authority’s official method.
Why might my official score be different?
Answer-key corrections, cancellations, multiple shifts, normalization, sectional scoring and the authority’s rounding rules can change an official result. This tool calculates raw marks only from the values entered.
Does meeting an entered minimum score mean I qualify?
No. The optional comparison is arithmetic only. Qualifying rules, category cut-offs and selection are determined by the recruitment authority.
