Dockyard Apprentice School, Naval Dockyard Mumbai has announced 283 apprenticeship seats across 32 designated trades under Advertisement No. DAS (MBI)/APP/IT-28. The intake covers 30 ITI-linked trades plus two non-ITI routes: Crane Operator Overhead and Rigger.
The advertisement appears in the Employment News issue dated 3–9 October 2026. It does not print fixed calendar dates for registration; instead, it gives a formula. Applying the notice's own worked example to the 3 October issue date, online registration opens 7 October 2026 at 10:00 AM and closes 27 October 2026 at 11:55 PM.
Candidate note: IT-28 is a training intake under the Apprentices Act, not a regular Navy appointment. Finishing the apprenticeship does not automatically convert the trainee into an employee of Naval Dockyard Mumbai.

Qualification Rules
The education rule changes by trade. Check the exact trade name before applying.
| Applicant route | Minimum qualification |
|---|---|
| Rigger | 8th Standard with at least 50% aggregate marks |
| Crane Operator Overhead (SI) | 10th Standard with at least 50% aggregate marks |
| Other 30 designated trades | At least 50% in the relevant subjects in Class 10 + at least 50% aggregate in the corresponding ITI trade under NCVT/SCVT |
For the ITI routes, the trade on the certificate must match the corresponding designated trade permitted by the Apprentices Rules. Candidates should not choose an unrelated trade merely because the names look similar.
If you need to check a marks threshold, use the Regal Naukri Marks Percentage Calculator for the arithmetic and then compare the result with the exact rule printed in the notice.
Age Rule
The apprenticeship notice does not set an upper age limit for apprenticeship training. It sets only the minimum age according to whether the trade is hazardous.
| Trade type | Minimum age |
|---|---|
| Non-hazardous designated trades | 14 years |
| Hazardous trades | 18 years |
The crucial date for age and eligibility is the closing date for receipt of online applications. The notice also cautions that a separate upper-age rule applies later if an ex-Naval Dockyard Apprentice seeks recruitment as Tradesman Skilled; that is not an upper-age limit for this apprenticeship intake itself.
For date-of-birth arithmetic, the Age Calculator can show your completed age on the closing date before you compare it with the trade rule.
Stipend and Training Period
There is no single common stipend for all 32 trades, so candidates should use the trade-specific amount rather than assuming the highest figure applies to everyone.
| Trade / group | Training period | Monthly stipend |
|---|---|---|
| Most designated trades | 1 year | ₹9,600 |
| Shipwright Steel | 2 years | ₹9,600 |
| Pattern Maker | 18 months | ₹9,600 |
| Crane Operator Overhead (SI) | 15 months | ₹8,200 |
| Rigger | 2 years | ₹6,800 |
The notice shows Shipwright Wood with a one-year training period and ₹9,600 monthly stipend.
Application Dates: Why They Are Calculated
The notice uses a date formula rather than printing a fixed opening and closing date:
- Registration opens on the fifth day from publication of the notification in Employment News, from 10:00 AM.
- Registration closes on the 21st day from the opening date, up to 11:55 PM.
- The same notice gives a worked example showing that an issue dated 1–7 September would open on 5 September and close on 25 September.
Because this advertisement is in the 3–9 October 2026 issue, the matching calendar window is 7 October to 27 October 2026. Candidates should still check the application portal on opening day in case Naval Dockyard publishes an amendment or operational update.
Selection Process
1. Screening and shortlisting
Applications are screened online. If applications are excessive, Naval Dockyard may shortlist candidates for the written examination, normally in a 1:25 ratio for each vacancy in each trade and category.
For the 30 ITI-linked trades, shortlisting merit uses 50% weightage to Class 10 marks and 50% weightage to ITI marks. Crane Operator Overhead uses 100% of Class 10 marks, while Rigger uses 100% of Class 8 marks.
2. Written examination
The written test is objective/OMR-based and carries 100 marks in 2 hours.
| Subject | Questions / marks |
|---|---|
| General Science | 35 |
| Mathematics | 35 |
| General Knowledge | 30 |
| Total | 100 |
The question level is based on Class 10 for all trades except Rigger, whose paper follows the Class 8 standard. The test is bilingual in English and Hindi.
3. Merit tie-break
If written-test marks are equal, the older candidate gets preference based on date of birth. If the date of birth is also the same, alphabetical order of the first name is used.
4. Document verification and medical fitness
Candidates called after the examination must produce original documents. Final engagement is also subject to medical fitness under the Apprentices Rules.
Physical Fitness Standards
The notice lists minimum physical standards for apprenticeship training, including:
| Parameter | Minimum |
|---|---|
| Height | 137 cm |
| Weight | 25.4 kg |
| Chest expansion | 3.8 cm |
Candidates must also be free from specified contagious/chronic conditions and otherwise satisfy the medical-fitness rules applicable to apprentices.
